“L’Amante Anglaise” (The English Lover) opens November 7th

by markland on Oct.31, 2009, under Great Scott Theatre, Past Shows

englishlover_pdfimgIn 1966 dismembered body parts of a woman are found on different trains throughout France. A married woman, Claire Lannes, has readily confessed the grisly murder to the police. Her husband, Pierre Lannes, surprised and horrified by his wife’s act, has taken no responsibility for the crime. The victim was a live-in housekeeper to the married couple and cousin to Claire. After being charged, Claire has been kept in prison while Pierre has moved out of their house and is ready to begin his new life. Before the court’s final judgment, an interviewer has been granted access to the married couple to see if a determination of motive can be discovered.

This highly taught and suspenseful drama takes place in a non-descript interview room, with husband and wife being individually questioned. Marguerite Duras’ L’Amante Anglaise details the cruelty of a dying marriage while exploring the darkness and profundity of the human condition. At the end we are only left to ask how love, silence and murder can concoct a potent and dangerous combination that can send some of us to jail, others to death and others to a new life.

WHAT: “L’Amante Anglaise (The English Lover).” A play. U.S. Premiere of this translation.
